What to Plant in Late Summer in Surrey

As our summers wind down, the weather is still lovely here on the Lower Mainland, like in Surrey. The 30-day forecast still shows warm, mild weather with occasional rain, but no heavy downfalls. If you are wondering what you can still plant in your garden, right now, this is the blog for you because you have a lot of options.

Vegetables

If you are a vegetable gardener, you can plant all the cool-loving, shoulder-season vegetables like root vegetables: beets, Jerusalem artichokes, and carrots. Carrots can be sewn pretty much all year round. Just drop a few seed in with whatever else is growing and you will be able to pull carrots all the time.

Flowers

Yes, absolutely, and some flowers like the cooler air. Pansies and violas are perfect. Plant your daylilies. Plant any perennials that you are wanting to give a head start to. You can plant seeds for next year’s delight, such as poppies.

Trees and Shrubs

Yes, you can plant them, but you have to offer them extra care and lots of watering until our heavy rains move in—about a month away. Plant them, baby them, and let them get their roots established for next year. You’re not behind; you’re ahead of everyone else.

Planting season is not over! Take advantage of Surrey’s mild weather to plant what your heart desires right now.
