in
Surrey is well known in Canada for having a longer growing season than a lot of other places in the country which means you have options when it comes to planting a vegetable garden. With the right plant selections, you can plant a garden that will see you reaping a harvest of fresh veggies well into fall and perhaps even into early winter. In today’s blog we will be looking at the best vegetables to plant for a late autumn harvest in Surrey, BC.
Leafy Greens
There are many varieties of leafy green vegetables that grow great in the cooler months of autumn. These include greens like lettuce, spinach, arugula, bok choi, chicories, mache and various mustards. As well if there is a risk of an early frost many of these greens can be harvested early for delicious baby greens. You may also want to consider covering these with plastic if the weather gets too cold.
Green Veggies
Other popular vegetable crops that can be harvested in late fall or early winter are classic green veggies like broccoli and Brussel sprouts. There are even advantages to planting these crops to be harvested in the autumn months as Brussel sprouts can often become sweeter when they grow in cooler weather.
Root Vegetables
Root Veggies like Carrots and Beets do great in cooler weather and can often grow into October making for a great late autumn harvest. Like with leafy greens many root vegetables can be harvested early if it looks like it’s going to be too cold.
