Top Plant Choices to Receive in the New Year
in InformationalDuring the holiday season, plants are a common and much appreciated gift. Today, in our blog, we would like to talk about some of the plants that are often given as gifts in the winter.
Zygocactus
Historically, the Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus were called Zygocactus as the genus, but now they are referred to as the genus, Schlumbergera. These plants have the great advantage of typically flowering in the winter, and they can be very long lived and become giant.
There are different colours, varieties, and flowering times to choose from. These are a great choice. They can be a hanging plant or sit on a piece of furniture because they do hang some, but they also bush out in every direction.
Poinsettia
Poinsettias are usually easy to find and also come in several colours. What a lot of people don’t realize is that poinsettias are in the family, Euphorbiaceae, and are easy to take care of. While poinsettias are toxic if ingested, their toxicity is often exaggerated. They can be kept as an indoor plant and will flower again under the right conditions. The flowers are not true flowers, but something called “bracts”.
Orchid
Orchids are always spectacular and sought after all over the world. Different species can have very different growing requirements, but they can be grown and flowered successfully indoors. If you become passionate about orchids, most major cities have orchid clubs that can help you with cultivation.
Other Tropicals
Other tropical indoor plants are welcome gifts in every season. Some of the easier to grow ones include aloes, jade plants, spider plants, and snake plants. Plants are terrific at making rooms feel more lived in, stylish, and they give off oxygen!
