Would Lighting my Garden Affect the Wildlife?

in Informational

Outdoor lighting can be a beautiful part of your garden decor. Lighting can be used to add colour, highlight specific areas, or create that perfect ambience. One concern with outdoor lighting that many people have is whether it will affect the local wildlife.

The simple answer to this question is that yes, lighting your garden can affect the wildlife. The most common example of outdoor wildlife being affected by lighting are moths. They are drawn to lights, and will often circle the lights. Light may also make it more difficult for prey to hide, or even predators to hunt.

There are some modern ways to mitigate the affect that outdoor garden lights can have on wildlife. First, avoid blue spectrum of light, and go for softer, warmer hues. Also, you may choose to go with lights that can be dimmed and are not super bright.

Furthermore, consider where you are aiming the lights. As garden lights can confuse birds, try to keep the lights aimed lower.

Finally, consider going with lights that have a timer, or are smart lights that can be programmed to turn on and off at certain times. There is not usually a reason to have lights on throughout the entire night. Modern smart lights are a great option, as they can be easily set to turn on and off at specific times, minimizing the impact on local wildlife.

Garden lights are popular as they provide a beautiful ambience allowing you to enjoy your space. With this said, make sure that you are responsible and take some simple measures to ensure that any disturbance to local wildlife is minimized.
