Can Jacuzzi Hot Tubs and Spas Be Used Safely in Surrey in the Winter?

One common question that Surrey hot tub or Jacuzzi owner’s, or those looking to purchase one, frequently asks is whether hot tubs and spas can be safely used in our surrey BC winter. The quick answer to this question is yes, but there are some important things to understand in ensuring your hot tub or spa survives the winter.

Keep up the Water Level

Contrary to what most people would think, cold winter weather actually causes the hot water from your spa to evaporate quicker. It is very important to make sure that the water level does not fall below the skimmer level, as this will result in water no longer circulating. In winter, this can be bad news, as water sitting in the pipes could freeze and crack. Avoid this by making sure water is moving as it should.

Use a Good Cover

A good cover is not only important in Winter, but also throughout the entire year. A good cover helps to mitigate water loss through evaporation, and can help you with the first tip. It also helps insulate, keeping the heat in the tub and losing less to the cold outdoors. This can help you save on heating bills and make sure the water is warm when you go to use it. Also, if your spa or Jacuzzi is not undercover, make sure the cover is sturdy enough to survive should we get a snowfall.

Limit Length of Use

Of course, most importantly is making sure you are safe as you use your Jacuzzi. It can be tempting to stay in the hot tub for a long time, especially when the outside is so cold. Make sure you limit the duration of your soaks, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Also, try to avoid getting out and back in multiple times, as going from cold to hot can be stressful to the body. Otherwise it is perfectly safe to continue to use your hot tub or spa in the cold winter months!

Following these suggestions can help make sure both you and your hot tub is safe during the cold winter months, and you are able to enjoy what they have to offer. For all of your Spa, hot tub and Jacuzzi needs in Surrey, head down to Art Knapp.
