Turn to Your Garden During COVID-19 Isolation
in InformationalDuring this most troubling of times, take refuge in your garden. And it doesn't matter whether your garden is 100 acres or a small patio with a few potted plants. Take refuge there, and enjoy what it has to offer.
Claude Monet said, "My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece." Your garden has more to offer than you may realize. Here are some reasons why you can and should turn to it during these times of isolation.
1. Gardening will boost your mood.
We're not kidding. There is some good evidence that getting your hands dirty in the garden is good for your mental health. Apparently, microorganisms in soil increase serotonin in your brain.
2. Observing nature.
If you sit quietly in your garden, you will see a lot of activity. There will be all manner of pollinators, birds, insects, and butterflies. There are also specific things you can plant to attract one or more types of wildlife. Talk to us about that.
3. Bring the garden indoors.
It's possible to plant a "cutting garden" or plants that make great cut flowers. If that's something that interests you, a cutting garden can be created in pots as well as in the ground.
4. Gardening is exercise.
It really is. Even less strenuous things like trimming and weeding burn about 300 calories per hour. You can get some good exercise in your yard or on your deck.
